What The Saints Say....
Throughout the history of the Church, the saints have offered us timeless wisdom to help us cherish and understand Jesus' Presence in the Holy Eucharist. Below are some selected excerpts from their writings.
"[T]he Eucharist is the flesh of our Savior Jesus Christ, flesh which suffered for our sins and which the Father, in his goodness, raised up again."
-St. Ignatius of Antioch (died ca. 107)
"[J]ust as by God's word Jesus Christ our savior became flesh and blood for our salvation, so also we have been taught that the food made Eucharist by the word of prayer that comes from him is both the flesh and the blood of that Jesus who was made flesh."
-St. Justin Martyr (died ca. 165)
"Do not regard the bread and wine as simply that, for they are, according to the Master's declaration, the body and blood of Christ. Even though the senses suggest to you the other, let faith make you firm."
-St. Cyril of Jerusalem (315-86)
"How many there are who still say, 'I want to see his shape, his image, his clothing, his sandals.' Behold, you do see him, you touch him, you eat him! He gives himself to you not just to be seen, but to be touched, to be eaten, to be received within."
-St. John Chrysostom (347-407)
"He took earth from earth, because flesh is from the earth, and he took Flesh of the flesh of Mary. He walked on earth in that same Flesh, and gave that same Flesh to us to be eaten for our salvation. More over no one eats that Flesh unless he has adored it...and we sin by not adoring it."
-St. Augustine (354-430)
"Down in adoration falling, this great Sacrament we hail;... Faith will tell us Christ is present when our human senses fail."
-St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-74)
"The light of natural knowledge does not show us the object of faith, since this object is unproportioned to any of the senses. Yet we come to know it through hearing, by believing what faith teaches us, blinding our natural light and bringing it into submission."
-St. John of the Cross (1542-91)
"When I am before the Tabernacle, I can say only one thing to Our Lord: 'My God, you know that I love you.' And I feel my prayer does not tire Jesus; knowing the helplessness of His poor little spouse, He is content with her good will."
-St. Therese of Lisieux (1873-97)
"I recall that I have received most light during adoration which I made lying prostrate before the Blessed Sacrament for half an hour every day throughout Lent. During that time I came to know myself and God more profoundly."
"When the priest exposed the Blessed Sacrament, and the choir began to sing, the rays from the image pierced the Sacred Host and spread out all over the world."
-St. Faustina (1905-38)
"When we come back in the evening we have one hour of adoration before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, and [at] this you will be surprised: We have not had to cut down our work for the poor [to allow us time for eucharistic adoration]. The one hour of adoration is the greatest gift God could give a community because ... we love the poor with greater and deeper faith and love."
-Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta (1910-97)
